King is not a championship-caliber club. And both teams are competing in the Public League's Bronze Division, a nice name for the collection of non-contenders that is realigned every year to include the least competitive teams. But Gray's power is undeniable.

``Tayesha can play in the Silver or the Gold,'' Hand said. ``I don't think the schedule we play has anything to do with whether she can play.''

Gray compiled a team-high .385 batting average last year, when Furness competed in the Silver Division. Her seven home runs led the team.

So what was Gray hoping to accomplish when she came to the plate with the bases loaded for the second time on Monday?

``I was just thinking `Get 'em home, get 'em home,' '' said Gray, who insists she would have settled for a single.

Gray also plays basketball for Furness and dabbled with volleyball for a year. But the pace of softball suits her best.

``Basketball is just more aggressive,'' she said. ``In softball, you can take it easy and concentrate more on the flow.''

A softball starter since her freshman year, Gray is hoping for All-Public consideration and a playoff berth this season. And she wants to continue with the sport in college.

Though she's currently in the school's law academy program, Gray knows her future will not be in a courtroom.

``It will be biology, medical care or something,'' she said. ``I'm studying law now, but I wouldn't want to study it in college.''

She may need the law background, however, to successfully argue her point about her hitting style.

``It's a power stroke,'' Hand said, definitively. ``She's not a very big girl, but she's a strong girl.''

ALSO IN THE SPOTLIGHT Baseball. Winning pitcher Matt Brady knocked in six runs with four hits, including a grand slam, as The Hill School buried Hun School (N.J.), 16-6. . . . Paul Blasetti hurled a no-hitter, striking out 14 batters in leading St. Joseph's Prep over North Catholic. . . . Two homers and two singles by Chuck Bechtel netted six RBIs and keyed Spring-Ford's 13-2 victory over Lansdale Catholic.

Softball. Dawn Miller doubled three times and tripled once, finishing with five runs and four RBIs in Lincoln's 14-3 massacre of Frankford. . . . In pitching a perfect game, Candace Clark struck out 15 batters, including the first eight of the game, and set the tone for Chichester's 5-0 victory at Harriton.

Boys' lacrosse. Matt Bailer's eight goals and one assist helped carry Episcopal past Haverford High, 17-6. . . . Holy Ghost Prep's Rob Cumming accounted for all but one of his team's goals, scoring four times and garnering five assists in an 11-9 win over George School.

Girls' lacrosse. Emily Ryan tallied six goals and two assists in leading Haverford High past Upper Moreland, 10-8. . . . Seven goals by Katie Robbins helped Methacton slam Cheltenham, 19-9.

Girls' soccer. Dana Metzger's hat trick was more than enough for Cheltenham as the Panthers shut out Upper Merion, 8-0.
