New York, Paris, Milan, and London may be established style capitals, but booming Seoul, Korea just might be fashion’s next great city. Just ask Karl Lagerfeld: He staged Chanel’s traveling resort show in the capital this week, drawing stars from both West (Gisele, Kristen Stewart) and East (singers like G-Dragon and CL). If the Seoul scene can be said to have an ambassador in the mainstream fashion world, though, it’s local Irene Kim, whose rainbow-hued hair and eclectic look have caught the eye of street-style photographers like Tommy Ton and Adam Katz Sinding of Le21ème. “Trends come and go so quickly here that designers and Koreans are quick at adapting to what’s next,” she says. “K-pop, K-beauty, and K-fashion have become Korea’s triple threat..”

Kim is something of a triple threat herself: Born in Seattle to Korean parents, the rainbow-haired beauty and former Fashion Institute of Technology student now hosts multiple style-oriented TV shows in Seoul, models for top designers in New York and Europe, and documents her adventures on Instagram (where she has nearly half a million followers) and Twitter (both under @ireneisgood). “I don’t think there is necessarily a “Korean style,” she says. “Koreans have become very cultured in terms of the way they dress.“

Here’s a look at Seoul’s burgeoning designer scene, handpicked by Kim.

The model-esque Central Saint Martins graduate Kathleen Kye, whose high-end streetwear line includes crushed-velvet outerwear and knits trimmed with slot-machine symbols, is one of the hottest designers in Korea right now. Just how hot? The label was a semifinalist for the LVMH Prize last year, and Rihanna, Kanye West, and Carine Roitfeld are fans. The spring 2015 collection was inspired by bees: “an extension,” Kye explains, “of the concept of unity and connection in our human life.”

Steve J and Yoni P

K-pop stars — and globally influential boutiques like Opening Ceremony — stockpile Steve Jung and Yoni Pai’s fashion-forward, feminine silhouettes rich in texture and print. Trained at Central Saint Martins (Jung) and London College of Fashion (Pai), the duo show their collections in London and even have a Topshop collaboration under their belt. Their latest foray: a new denim line, called simply SJYP.
