The 60-member Cinnaminson band has had 37 wins during the six years it has been a member of the band association, participating in competitions up and down the East Coast.

"These performances are much more than march music," said Jill Lee, president of the Cinnaminson Music Booster's Association, a parents' group. "There is a wide variety of presentations."

In addition to the Cinnaminson band, Lenape, Cherokee, Palmyra, Burlington Township, Holy Cross and Riverside High School bands will take part.

Many bands perform renditions of Broadway shows and movies, but the shows also involve costumes, props and medleys of popular music groups, as well as big band, Latin and rap songs, Lee said.

In previous years, the Cinnaminson High School Band has performed themes from Phantom of the Opera, a jazz show and a takeoff on the old TV series I Spy, which starred Bill Cosby and Robert Culp, said Ed Cook, director of instrumental music at Cinnaminson High School.

Preparing for the performances takes two to three nights of practice a week.

"We start during the summer practicing," Cook said. "They learn basic marching techniques," but during the school year, they clean up the routine and increase the difficulty of the routines, he said.

"It's a constant learning process," Cook said. "We are always adding things and finding ways to interpret art in different ways."

As a member of the band association, the Cinnaminson group performs at competitions in front of adjudicators, who give the students and coaches suggestions on how to do things better as well as decides the winning bands.

"They are very education-oriented," Cook said. "The purpose is to free up an artist's soul to be able to interpret the music."

The band association has its roots in a marching-band competition held in the fall of 1998. The competition, which was held at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, was hosted by the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from Bergen County.

After the competition, the Cadets received letters and requests for more marching-band activities. As a result, the Cadets Marching Band Cooperative was formed.

In 1989, the Cadets Marching Band Cooperative ended its first season with 11 regular-season shows.

In 1997, the organization added other activities in addition to marching bands and formed the band association.

Now, the association features bands from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.

Each year, the competition season lasts from September through November. More than 75 competitions were scheduled this year.

Bands taking part in the competitions tend to range in size from 30 to hundreds of members, all in the seventh through 12th grades.

Band association performances are one of several activities that satisfy all four standards for core-course competency in fine arts for all public high schools. The four standards are music performance, drama, art and dance, which are involved in every show.

To prepare for competitions, bands often need the support of parents.

"Putting together a program like this is a huge undertaking for the parent groups" from all the schools, said Steve Hyzer, vice president of the Cinnaminson Music Boosters Association. "There is a lot involved in transporting kids and equipment to get a band to a show like this."

This is the third year that the Cinnaminson band has hosted the competition, and the sixth that it has participated.
